Red Robins Fall to Indians in GNC Showdown

Senior center, Jack Lund, attempts a free throw in the first half of a GNC match up between Antigo and Mosinee in Antigo Friday, Jan. 9. Mosinee won the game 67-57.

Heading into Friday’s match up at home against the Mosinee Indians (5-4, 3-1), the Antigo Red Birds (6-3, 3-2) were winners of five of their last six games and hitting their stride.

They welcomed in an opponent in Mosinee, who had just four wins in eight tries on the season.

It was a match up of two teams heading in different directions, with Antigo heating up and looking to take the Great Northern Conference title, and Mosinee slipping to the bottom of the conference in the standings.

As most expected, Antigo came out firing in the first quarter, but the constant full court pressure from Mosinee kept them in the game. Antigo finished the quarter on a deep two-pointer at the buzzer from sophomore guard Braxton Resch.

After the buzzer-beater from Resch, Antigo appeared to have all the momentum, but Mosinee refused to go away. They opened up the second quarter on a 9-0 run that was eventually thwarted by a three-pointer from Antigo senior guard Cameron Noskowiak.

Mosinee used a 14-3 second quarter run to take a slim 29-26 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter Antigo shot lights out, particularly from the three-point line. Noskowiak was a perfect four-for-four from the three-point line in the quarter, as the team finished the quarter with five-three pointers.

Antigo’s defense also cranked up the pressure and briefly took a 46-45 lead late in the third quarter.

Right when Antigo once again felt that momentum was on their side heading into the fourth quarter, Mosinee hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer as time expired in the third quarter to take 48-46 lead.

The fourth quarter was dominated by Mosinee.

An 8-0 run by Mosinee gave them a commanding 10-point lead.

The 10-point lead would stick to the finish as Mosinee upset Antigo, 67-57.

The Red Robins were paced by seven three-pointers from Noskowiak, who finished the game with a team-high 21 points.

Senior center Jack Lund chipped in 12 points, while sophomore guard Matt Arndt added 14 points.

Resch, forward Luke Osborne and center Michael Bradley poured in a combined 10 points.

Next up for Antigo is a non-conference match up at home against Crandon (7-4, 5-1 in Olympian league play).

Followed by a GNC road match up with Medford (4-5, 2-2) Friday, Jan. 16 at 7:15 CST.
