The Antigo Red Robins varsity boys basketball team got back to its winning ways on Tuesday night as they rolled over the Crandon Cardinals, 60-33, at the Sheldon Fieldhouse in Antigo.

The Red Robins (7-3, 3-2) were beat rather handily last Friday at the hands of conference rival Mosinee, 67-57. Mosinee’s pressure stifled Antigo all night as Mosinee was able to pull off the upset on the road.

Tuesday was a different story for Antigo.

Like Mosinee, Crandon (7-5) came out and tried to pressure the Red Robins from the tip. They ran a number of different full court pressures, but Antigo was able to break the pressure easily all night.

“Friday, we were a bit more tentative with the pressure,” Antigo head coach Jesse Shaw said. “We broke the pressure, but didn’t make them pay for it. Tonight, the emphasis was to make them pay, and at times we did that.”

The Red Robins enjoyed a massive size advantage over Crandon all night dominating the glass and the paint. 6-foot-5 senior center Jack Lund had a career-night using his height and length to total a team-high 21 points and 14 rebounds.

“He (Lund) is the vocal point of our team offensively,” Shaw said. “It was good for him to respond after last Friday’s game where he did not score in the second half.”

As per usual, the Red Robins used the three-point line to their advantage raining in a number of threes throughout the game.

“We put a lot of emphasis on our shooting,” Shaw said. “I don’t like always relying on the three-point shot, you have to have a balance of the inside and outside game.”

Antigo was able to flip the script from Friday when offensively they were bothered by the defense of Mosinee. Tuesday, Crandon was bothered by the ferocious defense of Antigo. The Red Robins forced an unofficial 16 turnovers on the night, and forced Crandon into a number of difficult three-point shots throughout the game.

“We were good (defensively) in stretches,” Shaw said. “We were able to get our hands active and get deflections and steals, which lead to turnovers. I’d still like to be more consistent defensively as we play more teams in our conference.”

Offensively, the Red Robins were well-balanced with six of the eights players on the roster scoring at least two points.

Antigo jumped out to a quick 17-8 first quarter lead and carried that to a much larger, 32-15, halftime advantage, thanks to a deep two-pointer from sophomore guard Braxton Resch with just 1.2 seconds left in the half.

In the second half the script was much the same. Antigo took a 42-26 lead into the fourth quarter after yet another buzzer-beating play, this time, it was an alley-oop out of an in-bounds play from halfway up the sideline from Resch to senior guard Cameron Noskowiak.

Antigo kept the throttle on in the fourth quarter and cruised to an easy, 60-33 victory.

Lund led the team with 21 points.

Noskowiak chipped in 18 points of his own.

Senior forward Joe Wittmann added seven points off the bench.

Resch and senior center Michael Bradley poured in five points each.

Next up for Antigo will be a road showdown with conference rival Medford (4-5, 2-2) Friday, Jan. 16.
