Gordon J Hitz, 91
Gordon J Hitz, of Antigo, died Saturday, April 25, 2015 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. He was 91 years old. He was born on April 19, 1924 in Antigo, a son of Frank and Marie (Halstein?) Hitz. He married Ramona Keso on March 15, 1946 in Antigo. She preceded him in death on June 3, 1982.
He enlisted in the United States Air Force during his senior year of high school and served from 1941 – 1944. He graduated high school while stationed in Nome, Alaska.
Following military service Gordon returned to Antigo and worked at Guenthner Farms, Wilke Windows and later for the Green Thumb Conservation program through the Department of Natural Resources retiring in 1986.
He was a life member of the Leland-Tollefson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2653-Antigo. He was privileged to have participated on the Never Forgotten Honor Flight to Washington D. C.
His hobbies included hunting, fishing, woodworking, playing cards with family and friends. He enjoyed polka music, watching the Green Bay Packers and feeding and watching the birds.
Survivors include five daughters, Helen (Louis) Zdrazil, Antigo, Diane Schroepfer, Antigo, Pamela (Gregory) Obst, Wausau, Lori (Carver) LaMonaca, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Cheri (John) Bloemer, Sun Prairie; nine sons, John (Joyce) Hitz, Antigo, Gordon David (Cheryl) Hitz, Antigo, Bradley (Chris) Hitz, Antigo, Michael Hitz, Antigo, Herbert (Susan) Hitz, Overland Park, Kansas, Tommie (Tammy) Hitz, Antigo, Bill Hitz, Denver, Colorado, James (Theresa) Hitz, Bryant, Paul Hitz, Wausau; 42 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by two grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Karen Hitz; three sisters Marion Pregler, Margie Graham, Evelyn Lemmons; five brothers, Clarence, Eugene, Edward, LaVern and Arthur.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Bradley Funeral Home with Rev. Dean Bertsch officiating. Burial will take place in Elmwood Cemetery where the Antigo Veterans will conduct military rites. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 – 8 p.m. at the Bradley Funeral Home and on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services.
