Antigo High School Band performs “Outside the Box” at spring concert
The Antigo High School Band presented their spring concert Sunday afternoon, May 3rd in the Volm Theater. The concert theme was “Outside the Box” and included many unique pieces performed by both the concert and symphonic band, including music from “Mamma Mia” and “Les Miserables”.
The AHS Concert Band included a piece entitled “Mazama, Legend of the Pacific Northwest”, a contemporary tone poem that evokes the moods and spirit of an American Indian saga. The AHS Symphonic Band included a piece entitled “Earhart – Sounds of Courage”, based on the story of Amelia Earhart, which continues to capture the imaginations of aviators and historians worldwide. They also performed “Crystals”, a one-movement tone poem, divided into four sections that each musically represent a type of crystal. One member of the band played a didgeridoo, and the percussion section even submerged a large gong in a tub of water.
Director of Bands, Mr. Jeff Dewey joined the symphonic band for ”Trumpeters Lullaby”. The band dedicated the piece to Ms. Carol Schafer, the Antigo Middle School Band Director, who will be retiring at the end of the school year.
Members of the Antigo Area Community Band joined the Concert and Symphonic Band at the end of the concert to perform Fanfare for the Common Man by Aaron Copland. The Community Band will present their spring concert with the vocal group Of Chorus Sunday, May 17th at 7pm at the Volm Theater. Admission is free and refreshments will be served during intermission.
Other springs concerts include the AHS Spring Choral Concert Monday, May 18th at 7pm and the AHS Spring Jazz Concert Tuesday, May 19th at 7:30pm, both at the Volm Theater.
