Gloria Stickney Schmelter Day, 90

Gloria Stickney Schmelter Day, of Antigo, died Sunday, May 24, 2015 at her home. She was 90 years old. She was born on October 9, 1924 in Wittenberg, a daughter of Walter and Clara (Hanson) Diestler.

She was raised in Wittenberg and worked as a nanny in Chicago as a young lady. On June 14, 1941 she married Earl Stickney. Gloria was a homemaker raising their eleven children in Antigo. Earl preceded her in death on December 4, 1972. Gloria worked as a cook for many years beginning at Langlade Hospital, Eastview Manor, followed by Leffels, Black Jack and Hardees. On September 7, 1974 she married Earl Schmelter. He preceded her in death on December 24, 2001. On December 15, 2007 she married Coleman Day and he survives.

She was a long time member of Peace Lutheran Church in Antigo. Gloria was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and Green Bay Packers.

She enjoyed snowmobiling, knitting, crocheting and baking.

Survivors include five daughters, Ann (Denny) Jakl of Appleton, Marilyn (Jack) Prepster of Sheboygan, Gail (Richard) Schoepke of Tigerton, Gloria Jean Stickney of Antigo, Karen (Duncan) Henke of Antigo; five sons, Joseph (Jean) Stickney of Grafton, Marlin (Kathy) Stickney of Antigo, David “Whitey” Stickney of Gleason and fiancee Jennifer Bailey of Antigo, Kenneth (Faye) Stickney of Antigo, Robert (Naomi) Stickney of Antigo; daughter-in-law, Dorothy (Tim) Sharpe of Antigo; 32 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; four step-daughters, Shelley (Mark) Gehrke of Wausau, Terry Steele of Wausau, Marilyn Cullenford of Florida, Sharon (Gary) Propek of Minnesota; one step-son, Nick (Mary) Schmelter of Vernal, Utah.

She was preceded in death by her first and second husbands; a son Jerry Stickney; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren, a son-in-law, Curt Inderdahl, Jr.; two brothers, Donald and John Diestler; a sister, Mary Kemnitz; step-father, Gilbert Moss, step-daughter, Linda Ruf, two step-sons Ted Schmelter and Russell Cummings.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church with Rev. David Karolus officiating. Burial will take place in Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4 – 7 p.m. at Bradley Funeral Home.
