Robert L Umsted, 79
Robert L. Umsted, (Flag Emblem) of Antigo, died Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. He was 79 years old. He was born on November 18, 1935 in Fort Dodge, Iowa a son of Forrest and Ida (Beckman) Umsted.
Upon graduation from High School in Harcourt, Iowa in 1954 he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Early in his military career Bob was stationed at the Antigo Air Force Base. He met the love of his life, Phyllis Brandt in Antigo and they married on December 28, 1956 at Peace Lutheran Church and enjoyed 58 happy years together. She survives.
Bob served 23 years in the Air Force retiring as Master Sergeant in 1977. During his career he enjoyed much travel and many relocations, including two years in Tehran, Iran. Following military service he was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration for eleven years. He retired to Antigo in 1990 where he was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, prospecting and wintering in Arizona. He also enjoyed morning coffee with friends at the Dixie.
Survivors including his wife are a son, Ronald (Barb) Umsted, Hood River, Oregon; a daughter, Deborah (James) Morrison, Clear Lake, Iowa; five grandchildren Allison, Michelle, Matthew, Tara, Erica; three great-grandchildren Lily, Axel, Colten; a sister, Rosemary (Joe) Kaufman, South Dakota; four brothers, Roger (Marilyn) Umsted, Missouri, Richard (Nancy) Umsted, Colorado, Forrest Umsted, Minnesota, Gary Umsted, Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, MaryAnn Hanson and a brother, Jack Umsted.
A memorial service will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church with Rev. David Karolus officiating. Antigo Veterans will conduct military rites following the services. Visitation will be 12 p.m. until the time of services on Friday at the church.
