Antigo Community Members Will Present Holiday Concert
By Doug Benishek
The Antigo Community Band and “Of Chorus!” are preparing music that’s sure to spread holiday cheer.
In the auditorium seats, one will hear all of the usual beloved holiday songs – but this time with a twist.
The Community Band repertoire this holiday season consists of many traditional holiday songs that have been stylistically altered for a new, fresh approach, but still retain the joyful and celebratory feel that one would expect from the carols.
Some of the styles selected include; celtic, jazz, marching, gospel, and calypso.
Soloist Kathryn Gorichan is featured in Trumpeter’s Lullaby, the one piece that isn’t a Christmas carol.
Director Karen Trembath said that it was chosen since brass is often featured around the holidays, and Trumpeter’s Lullaby is a beautiful addition to the concert.
Another twist to the concert comes from the other end of the director’s podium.
Because of the absence of the usual director, three music educators and one student have teamed up to lead the band.
Mr. Jeff Dewey, Ms. Carol Schafer, and Ms. Karen Trembath, who, together with the help of the board of directors, chose Doug Benishek as a student conductor, will each direct pieces of their choosing.
The community band is always open to new members. Trembath says that instrumentalists don’t need college training; anyone who thinks they won’t remember their instrument from high will be surprised by how quickly they pick it back up. For instance, Trevor Dobrinska, who is on leave from his military service, will be performing in the concert.
The concert will be combined with Of Chorus! on December 6, 2:00 P.M at the Volm Theater.
