WisDOT travel information system keeps drivers better connected and informed

Heading over the river and through the woods to a family or friend’s house this year? AAA is projecting 100.5 million travelers will journey at least 50 miles from home during the holiday season, representing a 1.4% increase compared to last year. With gas prices across the state at an average low of $1.92 a gallon, Wisconsin travelers can expect congestion to impact travels over the next two weeks.

The Statewide Traffic Operations Center (STOC) in Milwaukee is keeping an eye on the interstate with over 400 traffic cameras statewide. The 24/7/365 control room monitors cameras and works closely with law enforcement to locate incidents and delays, and inform the commuting public through overhead message signs and the 511 Wisconsin travel information system.

Holiday congestion is a perfect reason to take advantage of the free 511 Wisconsin smartphone app or follow @511WI on Twitter. Receive traffic alerts, view road conditions and traffic cameras to help avoid delays caused by holiday backups or accidents. Always putting safety first, never access 511 information while driving. Either safely pull off of the highway, or have a passenger check it. The 511 Wisconsin traveler information system includes Wisconsin’s Interstate highways, U.S. highways and state highways.
