Eleanor S. Spiegl, 93
Eleanor S. Spiegl, of Antigo, died Thursday, January 7, 2016 at Wausau Aspirus Hospital. She was 93 years old. She was born on October 29, 1922 in the town of Rolling a daughter of the late Albert and Hilda (Hohensee) Schweitzer. She married Paul W. Spiegl on November 14, 1942 at St. John Lutheran Church in Mattoon. He preceded her in death on February 28, 1994.
She attended Strassburg Grade School and was a graduate of Antigo High School with the class of 1940.
She was employed as a clerk at Piggly Wiggly in Antigo until her marriage. She and her husband owned and operated a dairy farm in the town of Norwood retiring in 1978.
She was a member St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mattoon for 54 years serving in various offices in the Ladies Aid and Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. She served as Secretary-Treasurer of Aid Association for Lutherans (now Thrivent) Mattoon Branch for 27 years, where she organized many fundraisers for people of all denominations in the Mattoon and Phlox area.
Mrs. Spiegl also served on the Langlade County Housing Authority for 22 years having held the position of Secretary-Treasurer for many years. She also served as Treasurer for the PTA at Crestwood School.
As a member of Associated Milk Producers Inc, she served as president of district 15 auxiliary for many years. She was a member of the Strassburg 4-H club for 11 years and represented Langlade County at the Wisconsin State Fair as Dairy Queen in 1938. She served as a sewing leader for Phlox Flames 4-H.
When she moved to Antigo she became a member of Peace Lutheran Church, the Dorcas Society and the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. She enjoyed being a part of the Colonial Place Red Hat Ladies and Langlade County Seniors Club.
She loved sewing, cooking, gardening and spending the Holidays with her children, grandchildren and friends.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. Paul V.(Leigh Ann) Spiegl of Atlanta, GA, and Timothy J. Spiegl of Antigo; two daughters, Julie (Steve) Halambeck of Antigo and Sally (Steve) Sell of Neenah; nine grandchildren, Dr. Josh Spiegl DDS (Rachel Madeson) of Wild Rose, Kerri Spiegl (Arvin Fajardo) Santa Monica, CA, Stephanie (Josh) Kleinhuizen of Austin, TX, Jason Halambeck of Stevens Point, Ben Day of CT, Paul V. Spiegl Jr., Cassandra, Sterling and Jarrett Spiegl all of Atlanta, GA. She is also survived by special friends, Dixie Messer and Joan Cook.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a sister, Emma (Ray) Aulik; brother, Irvin (Bessie) Schweitzer; one sister and eight brothers in infancy; brothers-in-law, John (Helen) and Herman (Hazel) Spiegl; sisters-in-law, Martha (Victor) Anderson and Lydia (Ray) White; and special friend, Jane Walters.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 16 at 10 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church with Rev. David Karolus officiating. Burial will take place in the Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, January 15 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Bradley Funeral Home and Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church.
