Hitchhiking:

It’s very rare to see a “Hitchhiker” in our area anymore. There was a time when asking strangers for a ride was common and presumed as a safe method of transportation. College students would hitchhike while on vacation, soldiers would hitchhike after returning home or when they had leave, and some would hitchhike just to see the country. If you are a frequent traveler, you may spot a hitchhiker on the side of the road or at a wayside attempting to get from one city to another, but for the most part, the times have changed. In Wisconsin, state statute 346.29, loitering on a roadway, states it is illegal for anyone to solicit a ride on the roadway from any operator of a vehicle. Society is ever changing and it may not be the best idea to assist a hitchhiker if you do witness one, however; in recent years discussions and certain groups have been attempting to re-think hitchhiking and possibly bring back its popularity, but doing so safely. If one feels the urge to hitchhike in Wisconsin, remember that you are subject to penalties.
