Mattoon Elementary students and staff celebrated “Read Across America” during the first week in March.  March 1 was the big kick-off, with a surprise visit from Senator Tom Tiffany, who read a delightful story from the “Treasury of Classic Bedtime Stories” by Thornton Burgess.  After he finished reading a few chapters of a story about a fox named Reddy, he took questions from the students.

Mattoon staff prepared voice recordings from a variety of Dr. Seuss’s many books and played the recordings throughout the week. The students were responsible for guessing the title of the book and which staff member was reading. The week continued with “wear your wacky attire and wacky hairdos,” “Stop, Drop and Read,” “your world of words” (word work activities), and a parent and grandparent reading session. The week concluded with cookies and milk.
