For the Antigo Times

The Lady Robins soccer team went head to head against the Iron Mountain Mountaineers (5-2-1) Tuesday night at Listle Field for their last home game of the 2016 season, tying 2-2.

“Not knowing what the girls were up against, they lagged a little on the start but once they found their groove they rocked it,” Coach Bethany Bauknecht said.

The first shot was taken by the Mountaineers and was quickly shut down by Annette Olsen, who was in goal for the Robins. From front to back the Lady Robins were dominating the game. Senior captain Marissa Hartman had several shots on goal from direct kicks taken well above the 18-yard box, only to be shut down by the Mountaineers’ goalie.

Junior Emily Wald had several shots wide of the 18 along with senior captain Jillian Incha who was able to receive a beautiful pass from freshman Jess LaBay and sunk it into the back of the net at 30:04 for the first goal of the night.

That goal was quickly followed by a revved-up Robins team and once again LaBay rocked a passed to Montana Grabowsky for another beautiful goal, making the score 2-0 going into the half.

After recognizing the seniors on the team at halftime, the Lady Robins were ready to take the field.

Antigo’s passing was beautiful, the give-and-goes were spot on, and the Robins were once again in control. After making a wonderful tackle, junior Maggie Gallenberg took a deflection to the hand, resulting in a penalty within the 18-yard box setting the Mountaineers up for a PK shot which entered the goal on the far-right side making the score 2-1 at 63:34.

The Robins, however, did not slow down one bit. They came back to have several more shots, with no such luck. With luck on the Mountaineers’ side, a beautiful shot was taken from the far-right side of the field that lofted up and out of the reach of the Robins’ goalie, bringing the score to 2-2 with a minute and a half to go in the game. The Robins fought hard until the very end but were not able to make another goal within the 90 minutes of play, essentially ending the game in a tie.

The girls take on Northland Pines in Eagle River on Thursday at 5 p.m. for their last regular season game.
