David Simon, 96
David Simon died Wednesday, September 21 at Evergreen Terrace in Antigo. He was 96 years old.
He was born in Bavaria, Wisconsin on July 11, 1920 to Michael and Emma (Dumjohn) Simon. He was confirmed at and a longtime member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Deerbrook. It was there that he and Elaine Schroeder were married on October 31, 1945. They were blessed with three children, Kathleen, Michael, and Dee Ann, and three grandchildren, Katie, Michael, and Kari.
Most recently he was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Polar, where he moved in 1978. An active member in both churches, he served on the church boards and as president in the past. While a member of St. Peter, he was a member and past president of the AAL branch.
After Dave graduated from Friebel School in Langlade County, he helped his dad on the farm and milk route, also working on neighboring farms, along with some time spent logging near Redgranite as a young man.
He joined the US Navy in 1942 and served six and a half years during World War II and the Korean War. His duty included time on the West and East Coasts, aboard the USS Parks DE 165, and in Hawaii.
Upon his return from the Navy, he bought and operated a milk hauling service and a dairy farm until he moved to Polar in 1978. There he continued to work trucking fish to Canada and New York City, helping farmers and with Christmas trees, and was always ready to help his family and friends as needed.
Dave served his country and community well. He will be remembered by most people for his work at CoVantage Credit Union. He was a founding member of the credit union, served as a director from 1953-1993 and as a chairman of the board from 1963-1993, and remained a member until his life ended.
In addition to being a member of serval other cooperatives, he was a member and director of the Antigo Coop Shipping Association, and member and director of the Coop Oil Association for 18 years.
Many other activities included being clerk of River Grove School Board and first PTO president. He also was a leader for the Bluebell Builders 4-H Club. He was the Town of Polar Chairman for 14 years and also served on the Langlade County Board. He was a member of the American Legion, an honorary member of the Antigo High School FFA Alumni, and the Destroyer Escort Association.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine Simon of Polar; children, Michael (Karen) Simon of Cincinnati, OH, and Dee Ann Simon of Polar; grandchildren, Katie Simon of New York, NY, Michael of Nashville, TN, and Kari Simon of Cincinnati, OH; a brother, Martin (Esther) Simon of Colorado Springs, CO; and a sister Mae Ellen (Ron) Ehrenberg of Atlanta, GA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathleen Simon; brothers, Ted, Allen, Robert, and Edward Simon; and a sister, Caroline Parrish.
A funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, with Rev. Donald Engebretson officiating. Visitation will be 4:00-8:00 p.m. Monday at Strasser-Roller Funeral Home. A second visitation will be 10:00-11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Interment will follow the service at Elmwood Cemetery in Antigo. Local veterans will perform graveside military honors.
