Antigo hockey downs Medford 9-0 in season opener
By Craig Marx, Editor
Entering the season ranked No. 10 in the state, Antigo Red Robin hockey got off to a fast start for the 2016-17 season with a 9-0 win over Great Northern Conference rival Medford on Monday evening.
Tyler Husnick recorded seven assists as Robin forward Adam Schmidt scored four goals against the Raiders in the season opener. Husnick, a senior, is coming off a state-bound 2015-16 campaign in which he recorded a team-leading 37 assists while Schmidt, a junior, enters the new season on the back of a 43-point showing last year, including 19 goals.
Senior goaltender Ben Bartletti recorded eight saves in two periods between the pipes while freshman netminder Brody Bunnell made one stop in his 17 minutes of work in the third period.
Early season jitters resulted in a combined 14 penalties between the Robins and the Raiders, where Antigo was able to capitalize when it had the man-advantage with four power play goals for the evening.
The win over Medford marked the first of a four-game road stint for Antigo, where the benchmark raises next week with games against Stevens Point (Nov. 29), New Richmond (Dec. 2), and Superior (Dec. 3). The Robins’ home opener is scheduled for Tuesday, December 6 against Waupaca at 7 p.m. from the Langlade County Multi-Purpose Building.
