Walter Raimund Auer, age 91, of Elcho died December 30, 2016 at Aspirus Langlade Hospital.
Walter was born on December 5, 1925 to the late Raimund and Pauline (Ensinger) Auer in Niederdonau, Germany.
Walter came to the United States in the 1940’s. He resided in the Chicago area, owning and operating a barber shop and the Edelweiss Lounge. He later moved to the Lakewood area and owned and operated Edelweiss Lounge there. He then settled in Elcho.
Walter was an accordionist, sharing his talent at many parties and events. He recently played for the Oktoberfest held by the Elcho-Pelican Lioness Club in September. He enjoyed participating in the Body Recall exercise classes held in Elcho. He was known in Elcho for walking and riding his bike about the town. He was a dear friend to Larry at Our Place in Summit Lake, where a sign he made hangs reading; “Die Keine Kneipe” meaning the little tavern.
Walter was a generous and caring person with an interesting life, which he shared in his autobiography, The Way We Actually Where.
Survivors include a daughter, Edeltraud (Josef) Kerschhackl of Germany, 2 grandsons, Pepi and Roland also of Germany, dear friends, Brenda and Gary Goerke, Darla and Natasha Lewer, Delores Hein, Fredericka and Tony Bierdemann, who cared for him in his final days.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Hilda Schmid, dear friends, Gert and Resi Schrieber, and Herbert Vogel.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM at Upper Room Family Church in Elcho. Reverend Shane Wheeler will officiate. A visitation will be held Thursday at the Church from 9:00 AM until the service.
In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established.
Services are in care of Strasser-Roller Funeral Home.
Special thanks is extended to Aspirus Langlade Hospital staff including Drs. Tonya Lechtev, Kyle Dembowiak, and Jan Mrani, social workers, Christina and Joan, and Yolanda from Adult Protective Services.
