Letter to the Editor: “A Reminder to Vote for Pro-Education Candidates” by Dorothy Braun

A few weeks ago, I attended a meeting at Crestwood School explaining the plan to close Crestwood, Spring Valley, and Pleasant View Schools. The people there seemed very upset. They did not seem to get the connection between voting [and education]. The majority voted for Governor Walker, President Trump, and school closings.

Governor Walker cut more than a billion dollars from public schools. Antigo’s enrollment went from around 4,000 [students] in 1974 to 2,000 in 2017. More of Antigo students now live in the city or very near it. It would be nice to keep two rural schools open for all students K-5 to enjoy the advantages of the rural setting. Class size and distribution of special needs students would be more consistent.

If we keep voting for people like Governor Walker and President Trump there will be no public schools that 90% of our students presently attend. Now is the time to support your public schools. Crying when they are being closed won’t help. Voting will. Your kids will need an education to get ahead.

There are many good public tech schools and colleges. Compare the cost of them right now. As an example, a year at Edgewood College (a private school) in Madison is around $45,000. How many of you can afford the actual full cost of educating your children? Investing in education pays off. By paying taxes and supporting public education, everyone can get a good education, not just the rich.

Remember to vote for pro-education candidates.

Sincerely,

Dorothy Braun
