Helen Keller: A life Nearly Lost May 15th 6-8pm T.B. Scott Library, 106 1st St., Merrill. Jessica Michna of Racine will portray Helen Keller in the Friends of T.B. Scott Library’s Annual Program. Michna has become widely known for her riveting portrayals of First Ladies and other historic women as well as her fictitious characters. She has entertained groups throughout America including guests from as far away as New Zealand, Japan, and Brazil.
Learn About Geology of the Ice Age May 15th 6pm Rhinelander District Library, 106 N Stevens St., Rhinelander. David Mickelson, Emeritus Professor of Geoscience, Geological Engineering & Water Resources Management at UW-Madison will be speaking. He has taught glacial geology & geomorphology, the study of earth’s surface processes, among other studies. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Ice Age Trail Alliance since 2010 and he is the author of the book Geology of the Ice Age Scenic Trail. Impact of Wolf Predation on Wisconsin’s Deer Herds May 16th 6:30-8:30pm Antigo Public Library, 617 Clermont St., Antigo. Do wolves have an impact on the white-tailed deer population in Wisconsin? This is a question of great interest for Wisconsin residents. Learn a little of the history of wolves & deer & the science behind their interaction, while we explore current research on the subject. Explore the deer/wolf equation as it also relates to hunting and the impacts of other predators. This exploration will be led by Prof. Tim Van Deelen. Tim Van Deelen is a professor of wildlife ecology having worked as a researcher in several conservation agencies in the Great Lakes region. His teaching & research focuses on the conservation, management & ecology of large mammals in the Great Lakes region with a special emphasis on white-tailed deer and wolves. Tim regularly advises natural resource agencies on policies that affect populations of large mammals.

Staff will provide a parent lesson, an activity for parents and children to do together. The activity will build skills for school readiness and milestone achievement. Bear 100 Bike Race May 20th 7am Nicolet National Forest, Laona. This is a minimal support gravel road cycling event through the Nicolet National Forest focusing on self-sufficiency and personal responsibility. You are responsible for yourself. There are 3 routes, approximately 108 mile, 68 mile, and 31 mile. All participants will receive a map and cue sheet. Roads will be marked with arrows on stakes. Signage…some roads are unmarked. Some have road names, and some have US Forest Service road numbers. Zero your odometer at the start line so that you can follow the cues. Opportunities for water are marked on the maps as is a convenience store on the 108 mile route (bring cash or a card). Other than water at the designated locations (and the convenience store on the 108 mile route), if you want something you will need to bring it with you. Fees – $20 donation, 100% of which will go to the Laona Rescue Squad. For more information, go to thebear100.com.

Spring Wildflower Hike May 20th 10am-1pm carpool from Kathy & Cal’s Club 64 on Hwy 64 on the west side of Merrill at 9:15am. Or hikers can choose to meet at the Hike start at 10am. Take Hwy. 64 west of Merrill to Highway E. Follow E to Conservation Ave. Follow the Ice Age Trail event signs. The Northwoods Chapter of the Ice Age Trail Alliance will be conducting their annual guided Spring Wildflower Hike. The public is invited. The hike will follow the Ice Age Trail as it traverses close to the Newwood River and some very picturesque large old white pines. The trail is of fairly level terrain.
