Anyone interested in trapping or in need of completing a mandatory trapper education course should note an August trapper education class will be offered for up to 30 attendees at the Wis. Department of Natural Resources in Antigo.

DNR Conservation Warden Tim Otto of Antigo says the course is for anyone interested in becoming a trapper and for those who did not purchase a trapping license in Wisconsin prior to 1992.

“If you have not purchased a Wisconsin trapping license before 1992, you are required to pass this trapper’s course before you can trap,” Otto said. “This applies to all trappers.”

The classes are August 12 and 13 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. The class will be held as a Learn-to-Trap event and will involve a significant amount of hands-on instruction and learning.

The class will be limited to the first 30 students who register through the Antigo DNR office, which is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The registration cost is $12 per student.

Students will learn furbearer identification, habits, habitat requirements, history of trapping, trapping techniques, trap placement, skinning animals, trapping ethics and laws. There are no minimum age requirements, but the class is designed for 12 year olds.
