Melvin R. DeRuyter, 87
Melvin R. DeRuyter, 87, a lifetime resident of Town of Harrison, Marathon County, died May 27, 2017 under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and LeRoyer Hospice. He was born on March 27, 1930 the son of the late Levi and Clara (Bessert) DeRuyter. (Due to ill health, he moved to Antigo in 2016 and resided in Park View Apartments.)
On September 3, 1960 Melvin was united in marriage to Kathleen (Moore) DeRuyter at United Faith Church of Christ (the former Congregational Church) in Antigo, WI. Kathleen survives.
The couple operated a dairy farm in the Town of Harrison until retirement age. They raised three children. James (Jacki) DeRuyter, Melanie (Tom) Richards, of Antigo, and Kelly Jean (Ray Rappa).
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kelly Jean, one infant grandson, Joshua Rappa and three brothers, Arden, Lyle and LeRoy. One surviving brother, Eugene, lives in Lithia Springs, GA. Grandpa “Mel” dearly loved his eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and will be missed very much by all.
Melvin was a master wood carver and teacher. He enjoyed greenhouse gardening, drove school bus for 17 years, and after retirement he and Kathleen joined the flea market circuit and marketed their works of art, and gladly met many new friends.
In lieu of a formal funeral/visitation, a Celebration of Life will be hosted by his family in the near future, with Rev. Dr. Wes Jedras officiating.
