Edward Poock, age 79, of Almond, died unexpectedly on Friday, June 16, 2017 at his home.
Ed was born in Sumner, Iowa on September 15, 1937, the son of the late Herald E. Poock and Helen (Block) Poock Maahs. He grew up in Readlyn, Iowa and move to Wisconsin in 1945. Ed graduated from Wittenberg High School in 1955 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1956-1958 on the DDE U.S. Murray.
On September 5th, 1959, Ed was united in marriage to Sandra A. Bloecher at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Wittenberg. She survives.
Ed graduated from LaCrosse State University in 1961. He received his Master’s Degree in 1969 from Winona State University. Ed taught and coached basketball, football and baseball starting at Montello, Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Green Bay East, D.C. Everest and Almond-Bancroft. Ed was principal and district administrator at Almond-Bancroft for 18 years. In 1975, Ed coached the Wittenberg-Birnamwood Boys Basketball team to the state championship where they received state runner up. He also coached seven conference championship teams in basketball. His coaching career ended with his induction to the Wisconsin Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002.
Ed enjoyed playing baseball for over 20 years, playing for Wittenberg & Clintonville City teams. He won a batting championship in 1959 and 1961. Ed was also a member of the UWSP undefeated football team in 1955. Ed enjoyed passing on his knowledge of sports, not only to the children he coached, but to his children and grandchildren. He instilled in them the ‘love of the game’. He really enjoyed watching them play.
Ed was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Almond and served as an elder for 20 years.
Ed is survived by his wife, Sandra Poock; children, Kyle E. Poock, Winona, MN, Dr. Scott E. (Angie) Poock, Boonville, MO, Timothy S. (Naomi) Poock, Green Lake and Amylin E. (Eric) Johnson, Gleason; 8 grandchildren; sister, Carol Rae Schoepke, Burnsville, MN and step-sisters, Penny (Jim) Ebel, Apple Valley, MN and Mary Aton, Wausau.
In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by a son in infancy; sister, Norma Lee Kitzman; brother-in-law, Dale Schoepke and step-father, Carlton ‘Bud’ Maahs.
The funeral service will be held at 1pm on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Almond. Rev. Brian Roehrborn will officiate. Visitation will be held from 9am to 12:30pm at the church. Interment will be in Forest Home Cemetery, Wittenberg at 4pm on Thursday.
