DEVELOPING STORY: APD release says investigation is ongoing

In an Antigo Police Department release received late afternoon of August 4, the APD declared that Kayla Rauhut may not be presented with the original charges given. Investigations into the incident are still ongoing, according to the APD press report, and more information will soon follow.

The previous report details the incident as:

Kevin Harris, 45, was killed early in the morning of July 28 when he was struck and ran over twice by a vehicle driven by 22-year old Kayla Rauhut. The incident occurred in a narrow alleyway leading from a municipal parking lot to Edison Street near Family Video in Antigo.

Shortly after an adjacent Edison street tavern closed on Friday morning, Antigo Police Department responded to the scene at the alley at 2:17 AM where Harris was found bleeding on the ground. According to eyewitness accounts, Rauhut had hit Harris, got out of her vehicle and approached the victim now lying on the ground, and proceeded to return to her vehicle where she ran over him a second time.

Rauhut left the scene on foot and was later apprehended by APD officers. The suspect claimed a male driver was operating the vehicle at the time of the hit and run, but after officers investigated Rauhut’s SUV parked behind the tavern, they concluded the position of the driver’s seat was coincidental with that of a smaller driver.

Harris was transported to a local hospital and was pronounced dead at 3:34 AM.

With the investigation still ongoing, Rauhut was able to post her $2,500 cash bond early last week. Rauhut faces a charge of Hit and Run Involving Death and will make her adjourned initial appearance later this month on August 21.
