Emily “Jean” Snider died January 15, 2018 under the care of Goodwin House Hospice and Avalon Assisted Living Home in McLean, VA. She was 84 years old.
Jean was born April 5, 1933 in Bryant, WI, daughter of the late Marvin and Gertrude (Congleton) Porter. She married Dr. Clovis “Jack” Snider on October 9, 1957, who preceded her in death on February 4, 2015.
A graduate of Antigo High School and the University of Wisconsin, Emily held a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and earned a Master of Science in Psychiatric Nursing from University of Michigan. In her early career she was a public health nurse. The couple lived in Germany from 1958-1962, while he served in the U.S. Army. Following her graduate study and his medical residency program in Michigan, they moved to Tucson, AZ where, from 1966 – 1998, she taught as a member of the faculty of the University of Arizona College of Nursing. They were long time residents of Tucson’s west side. She returned to Wisconsin and visited Antigo and Eagle River often, especially during the summers.
Jean had a great fondness for her adopted desert home and walked daily in the Tucson Mountains with the many dogs she loved over the years. She enjoyed Tucson’s culture, music and arts, and was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church. Above all, Jean was a generous and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She shared her love of nature and beauty, her quiet humor and gentle spirit with all who knew her.
She is survived and will be dearly missed by her daughters Lauri Snider (Michael Malone) and Mary Sue Houser, granddaughters Hannah and Hattie Houser, Kenna and Amelia Malone, and nephews Marvin and Stephen Rockford and their families. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by 2 siblings, Marion Rockford, and Dale Porter.
A graveside service will be held on May 25 at 1:00 PM at Bent Cemetery. Reverend Debbie Pimm will officiate.
