For the Antigo Times

Thursday night at Listle Field, the Antigo Lady Robins soccer team competed against the Rhinelander Hodags. Rhinelander is always a tough team to go up against and tonight was no exception. The Hodags made their first strike just 21 seconds into the game. With the Robins only being on grass for the first time this week, they were still trying to find their footing when the Hodags struck three more times before the 10 minute mark. The Robins were playing a great defensive game and the girls were able to get the ball up to sophomore striker Kelly Kamin, setting up for their first shot at 6 minutes, only to be denied by Rhinelander’s goalie. Not long after that, sophomore Jami Nonnenmacher was able to take her chances with a beautiful shot but no luck getting to the back of the net. The Robins were giving their all, but it was no match for the tough Rhinelander team. Antigo was called for a handball inside the 18 yard box, setting up the Hodags for a 1-on-1 penalty making the score 5-0 under 12 minutes in. A penalty was called against Rhinelander, setting up the Robins for a nice direct kick from junior Hannah Nonnemacher, but she was also denied. The game went into half with the score 8-0. Even though the Robins had a tough road ahead, they still came out of halftime fighting, but that was no match for what the Hodags had in mind. They continued to challenge the Robins, finding their weaknesses and exposing them. The final score was 12-0 and the game was called at 60 minutes. Sophomore Jena Nonnenmacher played a phenomenal, gutsy game between the pipes, with 16 amazing saves and shows a lot of talent for Antigo’s future. Antigo takes on Newman Catholic at home on Tuesday, May 1 at 5:00 for their first conference game of the season.
