Aletta Gertrude Berndt, age 94, of Antigo, died Monday, May 21, 2018 at Rosalia Gardens. She was under the care of LeRoyer Hospice.
Aletta was born on September 21, 1923 in Racine, WI to the late Gustave and Henrietta (Koch) Berg. She attended Trinity Lutheran School until the eighth grade and graduated from Lutheran High in Milwaukee in 1941.
She was united in marriage to Ervin Berndt on May 15, 1949 in Milwaukee. He preceded her in death on March 1, 1999.
She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, where she was employed for 30 years as church secretary. She was active in the church choir and Peace Lutheran Dorcas Society.
She was a volunteer at Eastview Medical and Rehabilitation Center.
Aletta was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed bowling on the Antigo Women’s Bowling League and golfing and watching baseball and basketball. Some of her hobbies included counted cross stitch, crocheting, and knitting.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Carol (Harry) Brzezinski of Grayson, GA and Nancy (Bill) Resch of Birnamwood, a son James (Lucille) of Rice Lake, 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and a brother, Herbert (Grace) Berg of New Ulm, MN.
She loved burning candles, so it was fitting that John 8:12 became a favorite Bible verse for Aletta. “I am the light of the world, whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”
In addition to her parents and husband, Aletta was preceded in death by a sister Ruth Koelpin.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 26 at 12:00 noon at Peace Lutheran Church. Reverend David Karolus will officiate. Visitation will be Saturday at the church from 10:00 AM until the service.
Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
Memorials in Aletta’s name may be directed to Peace Lutheran Church or Rosalia Gardens.
