Boys & Girls Club Looking for Mentors
The Boys and Girls Club of Langlade County is seeking caring individuals to provide young people with emotional support, counsel, friendship, and a constructive example in a structured and trusting relationship to become mentors to youth in our community. Mentoring guarantees young people that there is someone who cares about them and assures them they are not alone in dealing with day-to-day challenges.
According to results from the Unified School District of Antigo’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey that was done in 2015, 38.1 % of middle school students and 25.6% of high school students reported they were bullied. 21% of high school students reported binge drinking at least once in the 30 days prior to the survey. 15.4% of middle school students reported drinking alcohol at least once in the 30 days prior to the survey.
Research confirms that quality mentoring relationships have a powerful and positive effect on young people in a variety of personal, academic and professional situations.
Youth involved with a mentoring program are:
- 46% less likely to use illegal drugs
- 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
- 52% less likely to skip school
- 32% less likely to hit someone
- 37% less likely to lie to a parent
It is important that as a community we begin taking ownership of the issues that our youth face on a daily basis. It will take a community-wide response to overcome and prevent many of the issues that members of our community struggle with.
