The Antigo Wrestling Team Had an Outstanding Saturday at the Great Northern Conference Championship

FOR ANTIGO TIMES

The Conference Championship was hosted by Medford. Incredible performances by Logan Edwards and Collinn Eldridge led to a strong second place showing. Host Medford won the tournament, while honorable mention ranked Tomahawk took third.

Senior Collinn Eldridge, who had the best individual performance at the tournament as the only wrestler with 5 victories via pinfall, joined an extraordinary club as only the 8th Antigo wrestler to ever win a conference tournament twice, and the first in 18 years to accomplish this feat.  Collinn’s superb day included 5 first round pins, leading to 46 team points. Collinn is looking forward to the upcoming postseason.

Equally impressive was Sophomore Logan Edwards, the third seed at 126 pounds. After earning a pinfall and bye in his first two rounds, Logan avenged a loss from earlier this season by defeating top seed Eric Rehbein of Medford by a 3-2 decision. Riding the high from that impressive match, Logan was able to pin the 10th ranked wrestler in the state in round 4, with a fall over Luke Knight of Tomahawk. Logan finished the day with another fall, ending with 43 team points and his first conference championship.

Nick Roller was able to score 36 team points with a strong second place showing. Nick had two victories via forfeit and two falls to get him into a finals match with 5th ranked Jake Rau of Medford. Despite wrestling a tough match, Nick came up just short of championship gold.

Also finishing second was Conner Dettman at 113 pounds. Conner had two victories by decision, a victory by major decision, and a victory by fall for a total of 28 team points.

12th ranked Ben Stimac took third at 132 pounds, adding 24 team points. Ben had a win via decision, as well as two victories by forfeit. Ben dropped an overtime decision to 8th ranked Dane Higgins of Medford in an exciting back and forth match.

Dylan Warax also placed third at 138 pounds, finishing with 27 team points. Dylan had two victories by fall, as well as a victory via forfeit. Dylan’s losses were a close 13-8 decision to Logan Bishop of Tomahawk, and an even tighter 11-7 decision to state honorable mention Andy Poetzl.

Neil Bretl had a successful day on the mats, finishing in third for 24 team points. Neil had a victory by fall, a victory by forfeit, and a victory by decision.

Talik Bussey used an exciting 5th round pin to take third and score 27 team points. Included in his matches was a tough fought loss to state honorable mention Tony Matti.

Placing 4th were Seth Beaber (19 team points), Jordan Dykstra (19 team points), Josh Huess (16 team points), Korbin Krueger (17 team points), and Jovanni Castaneda (13 team points).

Finishing in 5th was Brady VandeWeerd, who score 11 team points.
