Antigo’s 10u Stallions take 3rd place in home tournament

The 10u Stallions finished 2-2 in their home tournament to take 3rd place. The weekend started play Friday night before storms rolled, Saturday was lost to the second set of storms and when play ended on Sunday some families still had no power. In addition to weather the Satallions took on teams from Crandon, Merrill, Wisconsin Rapids and Menominee Michigan.
Taking on Crandon in game 1 the team held on for a 4-2 victory. In the first 3 innings on the mound Caleb Vandenlangenberg struckout 5 Cardinals allowing just 1 run to earn the win. A highlight came as Vandenlangenberg took a throw from catcher Scotty Hagerty to catch a runner coming home to end the second inning.
The Stallions scored a run in the first when Jordy Pregler who singled was driven in by a Vandenlangenberg hard hit grounder. In the second after walking Hagerty came around to score on an AJ Kohler triple. Kohler was then knocked in by a Cayden Carley baseknock. The team led 4-1 after three. Pregler added another single in the 3rd.
Kohler pitched a scoreless fourth inning striking out 2. Hayden Thill then took the mound striking out 2 and not allowing a run in the fifth. Thill picked up another k but allowed a run after a double and three walks in the sixth. Hagerty came in with bases loaded one out and a 4-2 lead and earned the save by punching out the next 2 batters on 8 pitches.
Saturday Morning the team got off to a fast start against Menominee plating 4 in the first. Gauge Guenthner, Thill and Vandenlangenberg all walked. With the bases loaded Hagerty singled to drive in 2. Kohler followed that with a double sending 2 more across home but was cut down trying to stretch it to a triple. Carley added a single.
Pregler did not allow the Maroons to score while striking out one.
In the second Zander Zwirschitz led of with a single and stole second after walks to Carson Rhode and Guenther he came home on a passed ball. With 2 on Pregler ripped a double scoring 2 more. Storms moved after 1 1/2 delaying the game until Sunday with the Stallions up 7-0.
Taking the mound to resume play Pregler allowed 3 runs in the second and stuck out one. Before throwing a scoreless 3rd with another punch out to earn the win.
Vandenlangenberg walked to start the 3rd inning. Hagerty drove him home with a double and advanced to third on the throw to the plate. Hagerty the beat the throw coming home on a passed ball. Carley added a single and stolen base.
In the top of the fourth Alden Jaje singled and came around to score on Guenthner’s single. Leaving the Stallions up 10-3 going into the bottom of the last inning.
Guenthner and Carley combined for a third of an inning as the Maroons plated 6. The out came as Catcher Hagerty gunned down a runner attempting to steal third and Guenthner applied the perfect tag. Vandenlangenberg came in with the bases loaded and punch out the next two batters for the save and a 10-9 Stallions victory.
Vandenlangenberg started the third game against Merrill on the mound, while battling a stomach bug, but was ineffective going 1/3 of an inning with a strikeout while allowing 5 runs. Thill came on in relief striking out 5 and allowing 4 runs over 2 2/3 innings. Zwirschitz pitched the fourth inning allowing 2 runs.
The lone offensive highlight in the first 3 innings was when Vandenlangenberg stole second after a walk.
In the top of the fourth trailing 9-0 the Stallions bats woke up. Starting of with back to back singles by Guenthner and Pregler. Thill followed with a single driving in Guenthner. Vandenlangenberg walked to load the bases. Hagerty stepped up to the plate and drove the ball to deep left center bringing everyone around with an in the park Grand Slam. The final was an 11-5 loss.
In the final game against Wisconsin Rapids Hagerty went 3 innings as 6 runs scored. Thill threw the 4th inning allowing 6 more to come accross.
Hagerty walked to open the second inning and came around to score on a Carley single. In the fourth Hagerty doubled followed by a Kohler single. Carley drove in his second of the game plating Hagerty with a single. Jack Sundermeyer added a baseknock. The final was a 12-2 loss.
In four tournaments this season the 10u Stallions took 1st in Waupaca, 2nd at DC Everest and 3rd twice in Antigo with never less than 5 teams in their brackets.
