Red Cross encourages sign-ups for free smoke alarms before Langlade County home fire safety event
FOR ANTIGO TIMES
[ ANTIGO, Wisc.] — Residents in Antigo and across Langlade County can now make appointments for a home fire safety visit – including installation and replacement of free smoke alarms – in August during an event held by the American Red Cross and the local fire officials.
On Friday, Aug. 23, trained home fire safety leaders will fan out in Antigo and across Langlade County to install free smoke alarms and work with families on their home fire escape plans. People living in Antigo and other areas of Langlade County who want to take advantage of this home fire safety event are encouraged to sign up at GetASmokeAlarm.org or by calling the Antigo F.D. at 715-623-3633.
“Home fires are our top daily disaster at the Red Cross and I’m proud to bring this safety and preparedness program to families in Langlade County,” said Wendy Savage, North Central Chapter Executive, American Red Cross. “Along with solid partners like the Antigo Fire Department, we’ll be bringing a powerful resource into a county that has experienced devastating fires in the past year.”
During the August installation day, home fire safety leaders plan to make installations and work with families in dozens of homes by appointment in Antigo and elsewhere in Langlade County. In addition, they will leave behind information on appointments for in-home installations in select areas.
The event is part of the national Home Fire Safety Campaign at the Red Cross. Since 2014, the Home Fire Safety Campaign and its “Sound the Alarm. Save a Life” events have brought alarms and preparedness to more than 1.8 million U.S. homes, which have helped to save the lives of more than 610 people, including a family in Janesville.
