Antigo Community Theater is in need of people of all ages for their fall production of “The Secret Garden” -Spring Version. The musical is based on the classic children’s novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The story begins in 1906, where we find Mary Lennox, a spoiled young girl who until the recent death of her parents, has been living a lonely life in India. Now orphaned Mary is sent to Yorkshire, England to Misselthwaite Manor the home of her bitter and reclusive Uncle Archibald Craven. Since the loss of his beautiful wife Lily, he has been caring for his invalid son Colin, with the help of his loyal staff and his brother Dr. Neville Craven.
Mary is also cared for by the household staff, particularly by her chamber maid Martha and her brother Dickon. Mary’s natural curiosity leads her to explore the estate and while outside she discovers a forgotten and locked garden. Ben, the gardener informs her that the garden is off limits by order of her Uncle Archibald. Through Mary’s spirit and pluck, she finds a key to the garden door and she not only learns how to explore and have fun, but also to make living things grow. Mary not only unlocks the secret garden but unlocks the hearts of her uncle Archibald and her cousin Colin and through forgiveness and renewal she eventually brings life and family back to the manor.
