One Nation, One People

Dear Reader,
Wednesday January 6th was a sad day for our country. We watched with disbelief as a mob attacked our Capitol while members of Congress were in joint session voting to ratify the electoral votes from the November election and to recognize the next President of the United States. In the past this procedure has been largely ceremonial; however due to unusual circumstances, it was much more serious this time around.

People were hospitalized, property was destroyed, and six people died including a Capitol Police offIcer. The DC Metropolitan Police Department, the Capitol Police, the DC National Guard, and the Secret Service all did their best to protect the Vice President and members of Congress in order to evacuate them safely. Even so, the day was fraught, and the images we all saw broadcast around the world showed a disturbing level of anarchy and chaos.

That evening Congress reunited back in the Capitol building to resume the people’s business of counting the Electoral College votes and confirming Joe Biden as the 46th President of United States. If there is a silver lining in this dark cloud – and I most definitely think there is – it is that both Democrats and Republicans drew together to mount a spirited defense of the democratic principles on which our Republic is founded. This reflects strength of character, which matters now more than ever.

It’s gratifying to know that our Republic is built on a strong foundation beyond anyone’s personality and ambition. May it ever be so.
