Senior Center October Activities

The Senior Center of Langlade County at 904 5th Avenue is announcing their activities for October.

The Annual membership meeting will be October 4 at 5:30 p.m. The sole purpose of the meeting is to elect six Directors to the Board. All current members are invited to attend. Any member living in Langlade County is eligible to serve on the Board. Nominations will be accepted from the floor. We will be serving light refreshments.

The exercise program for our members continues on Mondays and Thursdays at 10:00 a.m.  The sessions are led by physical therapist, Amanda Trieloff.  There is a $3.00 fee for each session you attend. Pre-registration is preferred but not required.

Line Dancing is a weekly event on Mondays at 1:00 p.m.

The October 4 movie is “The Inn of the Sixth Happiness”  a 1958  film based on the true story of Gladys Aylward, a tenacious British woman, who became a missionary in China during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The film stars Ingrid Bergman as Aylward and Curt Jürgens as her love interest, Captain Lin Nan, a Chinese Army officer with a Dutch father. Robert Donat, who played the mandarin of the town in which Aylward lived, died before the film was released. We will be serving popcorn and lemonade.

The Jeff Kersten Fraud and Scams educational event has been rescheduled for October 18 at 1:00 p.m. This is an informational presentation designed to inform the community of the many scams and frauds targeting senior citizens. Awareness is the key to prevention. This event is open to the public.  There is no fee for this event and you do not need to be a member of the Center to attend. It is open to anyone 55+. Pre-registration is appreciated but not required. We will not be playing Mah Jong on that Tuesday.

During the month of October, the Center will be collecting non-perishable items for the food pantry.  Bring your donations to the Center anytime during the month.

Bunco is Wednesday, October 12 at 10:00 a.m. You do not need to pre-register for this activity. The fee is $2.00 and all prize money is given out the same day.

The Bean Bag Tournament continues the second and fourth Tuesdays, 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Bean Bag practice time is 3:00 p.m. on Mondays with games on October 11 and 25.  Fee for the tournament is $3.00 per person. Cash prizes will be paid out the same day for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. The tournament is open to all members. Teams will be formed by a random draw. This event is limited to 24 players.

The Lunch Bunch will be meeting Thursday, October 20 at Chet and Emil’s at 11:30 a.m.

Donna Wiergert from the Langlade County Health Department will be at the Center with our blood pressure and health education program Wednesday, October 12,noon to 1:00 p.m. and Friday October 28, 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. She has a lot of health information and handouts for everyone. Also, there is a display table with the health issue of the month.

The Stroke Support Group meets at the Center Friday, October 14, at 11:00 a.m.

Our next day trip will be November 17 to Kiel, WI to hear the touring “Branson on the Road” for their 2:00 p.m. Christmas program. There will also be a special tribute to veterans. This is the 25-year anniversary of their Christmas celebration. The price for this trip is $110 per person. This includes transportation by deluxe coach, ticket to the show, and after the show a family style dinner of baked chicken, roast pork, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, dinner rolls. dessert, coffee and soda. Lunch before the show is on your own at Culvers in Manitowoc. The bus departs at 9:30 a.m. from the parking lot across the street from the Center and returns approximately at 7:30 p.m. Sign-up deadline is October 14 and you must pay at the time of registration. No refunds after the deadline. Cash or checks are accepted. Please make check payable to the Senior Center of Langlade County.

Stone Soup is playing at the Center the first three Fridays of October at 2:00 p.m. The “Memories” musical group will be playing at 2:00 p.m. on October 28.

December 1, we will be having a class in wreath making with Rachelle and Wendy. More information to follow. We continue our regular scheduled activities; coffee and conversation, Mah Jong, knitting & crocheting, cards and games, and music. We are always interested in suggestions for activities you would like to do or speakers you would like to hear. We are open 9:00 to 3:00 Monday – Friday.  Pick up a calendar at the Center. Membership dues are $10:00 per year and veterans are free for life.
