Youth takes over Antigo golf this season as key veterans have graduated in the wake of an impressive 2016 season, and Coach Steve Fermanich is ready for his crop of young golfers to gain experience entering the tee box.

“We are extremely young this year…so this will be a good chance for some younger players to make an impact on our season. I will be looking at several players to make the varsity squad,” Fermanich said.

The 2017 squad is very young, featuring only one senior – Luke Wendt – and just two returning varsity golfers in Jack Shinners and CJ Levis. The rest of the team, all freshman and sophomores, includes Daniel Bolen, Lennie Ebel, Maya Gaedtke, Evan Hartman, Nash Hintz, Sam Hoffman, Chris Krueger, Casey Lucas, Stella Quinlan, Tanner Resch, Carter Schlieve, and Frank Volpentesta.

The loss of Sam Brettingen, a top three finalist in the Great Northern Conference in individual points, along with Zach Falk, No. 7 in terms of points, and Zach Levis will definitely be felt by Antigo on the links.

Medford was one of the teams to beat in the conference last year, snubbing the Robins 44 to 41 in team point standings at the end of the season. Antigo went on to finish 5th out of seven teams in the WIAA Division I Regionals in Stevens Point.

The Robins begin their season the latest of all spring sports, teeing off live for the first time on April 13 at Wausau Country Club. With a few meets to get their swings down, Antigo begins the first leg of GNC play on April 25, with the seventh and final leg held in Medford on May 20.

Other tourneys of note for the 2017 Antigo golf season include a trip to Whistling Straits (Kohler, Wisc.) on April 24 and the fourth leg of the GNC schedule, held at Bass Lake County Club north of Antigo on May 9.

“Being so young, it may be a challenge to compete for another conference championship, but we'll give it a shot,” Coach Fermanich added.
