On Saturday, March 3, five young 4-Hers headed down to Madison for the annual 4-H Livestock Quiz Bowl and Skillathon. The team consisted of Gretchen, Gordon and Nolan Lucht, Robby Hagerty, and Evan Hackbarth. They were coached by Samantha Straley. Practice began in January, with participants meeting two times per week. Practices included running through questions, reviewing cuts of meat, and going through breeds of sheep, swine, and beef. They also studied tools used in the livestock industry, diseases, wool, gestation, parts of the body, origination of the cuts of meat, and more. During practice, the teammates focused on the answers, but also had fun spending time together. Overall the team placed 7th out of 20 teams. In the Team Exercise, they placed third. This activity consisted of the team figuring out how to move steers from a pasture into two different pens using small toy replicas. Gretchen Lucht placed 6th in the individual quiz portion.
