AARP providing tax aid for elderly

Posted

AARP Tax Aid has begun it’s 2018 season of tax preparation for the elderly. You must have an appointment to get your taxes done. No walk-ins will be accepted.

To make an appointment, call 715-627-6580. You will be called back with an appointment date and time. If you can not make the appointment given to you, call 715-627-6580 and you will be given a new appointment if it is before April 1.

What you need to know once you have an appointment:

The appointments are held at CoVantage Credit Union. Take the elevator to the basement and go to the table with the AARP sign.

Homestead rules have changed. If the taxpayer is under the age of 62 and applying for homestead, he or she must supply verification of disability or have earned income (something you are paid for doing like delivering papers or cutting grass). To prove disability, you must provide a physician’s statement, a statement from the VA certifying 100% disability, or a document from Social Security stating the date disability began. You will not be able to file for homestead without the documentation if you are disabled.

Please bring identification, last year’s returns, and all forms of income. This includes Social Security and SSI. You will need all your 1099’s and W2s.

It is very important that you bring a copy of your 2017 tax bill and the tax bill for 2016 that was paid in 2017. You will also need an original rent certificate completed by your landlord, signed and dated by him or her with no corrections.

You will need your medical and dental insurance premiums. If you are not getting Social Security, we need proof of insurance for the ACA.

If you are itemizing, bring proof of medical expenses, business expenses, and contributions to charity.
