For the Antigo Times
The Lady Robins took on the Lakeland Thunderbirds for the second time this season, falling 8-0, this time on their own turf on Tuesday night.
After a physical game yesterday, Antigo was slow to start.
The Thunderbirds were able to come away with the first shot on goal just 40 seconds into the match. With Lakeland’s continued aggressive attack Antigo’s defensive line was challenged and tired quickly causing a communication breakdown and more shots being taken.
With Antigo’s sophomore goalie, Emma Brown, between the pipes, she had some amazing saves. Unfortunately in the 9th minute of play, Lakeland was finally able to get a shot to the back of the net quickly followed by another, which was originally deflected by Brown, only to be ricocheted back in the opposite corner of the net making the score 2-0. With Antigo on the defensive and not able to get much going in the first half, Lakeland was able to get some nice breakaways leading to two more quick goals before the 20 minute mark.
Antigo started to pick up the pace and started to challenge Lakeland more and caused some frustration between them. The communication picked up along with their tackling and that allowed them to hold Lakeland until the 44th minute.
The score was 5-0 going into the half.
After some discussion among the Robins at half they knew what they had to do to hold the Thunderbirds. They did end up starting the half slower than needed and were not ready for the speed from Lakeland’s attack which led to two quick goals at the start of the half. After that Antigo started talking more and helping each other out, looking like a completely different team from the first half.
With senior captain Molly Brown and sophomore Hannah Nonnenmacher at the helm, the Robins were able to make some great plays, challenging Lakeland’s defense bringing out their flaws. Once those flaws were made known Antigo was able to exploit them. Sophomore Jess LaBay, along with freshman captain McKenzie Schroepfer and freshman Rylee Roth, were able to get some beautiful shots but unfortunately they were not able get them past Lakeland's goalie. Senior captain Sethany Sass, along with junior Kailee Pomasl, freshman Jena Nonnenmacher and junior Payton Bunnell, really stepped up their game shutting down Lakeland’s advances and pulling them offside only adding to their frustration.
Freshman Maddie Spencer, playing left defensive mid, did an outstanding job protecting her position and really helped out the defense and allowed the center mids to advance the ball up the field for more shots, but no luck. The Robins were able to hold the Thunderbirds until the 80th minute when they struck one last time making the final 8-0.
Antigo’s goalie had 26 saves on the night.
Antigo plays their third game of the week on Thursday in Medford at 5:00.
