Antigo High School Wrestling Team Splits Pair of Matches at Triangular In Medford

The Antigo Wrestling team defeated Mosinee 39-24 in the first match of the evening, and then came up short against Medford 55-17 in the second match up.

The match with Mosinee started at 138 pounds, with a match-up between Logan Edwards of Antigo and Chase Kmosena of Mosinee. Kmosena entered the evening with an honorable mention ranking at 145 pounds.

Kmosena was able to secure a first period takedown and brief nearfall to earn a 4-0 advantage going into the second period. Kmosena chose to start on the bottom, and earned a reversal to increase his lead to 6. Edwards was then able to score a reversal and cut the lead to 6-1. Edwards started the third period on the bottom, and after another 2-point nearfall for Kmosena, Mosinee jumped out to a 3-0 team lead.

Up next was Seth Beaber facing Matt Obremski. Beaber was able to capitalize on an early takedown and turn Obremski to his back, earning the victory by pinfall at 50 seconds of the first round. This put the Robins ahead 6-3.

After a scoreless first period, Robby Hagerty and Logan Johnson had a very eventful second period. Johnson chose to start on the bottom and earned a reversal. Hagerty was then able to secure his own reversal, and put Johnson on his back for a 3-point nearfall. Johnson was then able to score with another reversal, and this time finished the match with a pin at 3:38, giving Mosinee a 9-6 lead.

At 160 pounds, Jacob Dettman faced off with the third ranked individual in the state, Gage Coppock. Coppock was able to show that he is deserving of the ranking, scoring on a takedown and a fall to boost the Mosinee lead to 15-6.

Antigo started a nice little run at 170 pounds. Gideon Sass made short work of Noah Meshak, earning the Robins 6 team points with an early takedown and 53 second fall.

Then at 182 pounds, Josh Heuss took Ben Folwalski down 4 times in the first period, eventually earning the pinfall at 1:44.

Freshman Alex Schlieve kept the momentum going, facing Zach Owens. Schlieve was able to earn the first takedown, but a reversal by Owens tied the match at 2 going into the second. Owens chose to start on the bottom, and Schlieve was able to keep constant pressure and not allow an escape for the entire period. Schlieve chose to start the third period on the bottom, and was able to earn a reversal to take a 4-2 lead. After a penalty for locked hands against Schlieve, he was able to put Owens on his back for a two-point nearfall, securing a 6-3 victory, and increasing Antigo’s team lead to 21-15.

After a double forfeit at 220, Hunter Cordova continued the Antigo streak, facing Terry Walls. Cordova was able to secure a first period takedown, and after Walls chose to start the second period neutral, added another takedown for a 4-0 lead. Cordova was then able to turn Walls, and earned the fall at 2:31.

At 106 Danny Livermore earned 6 team points with a forfeit, and at 113 Jackson Folwalski of Mosinee won by forfeit.

At 120 pounds, Sam Bretl faced Kade Kmosena. Kmosena was able to secure an early takedown. After Bretl chose to start on top to start the second period, Kmosena earned an escape and another takedown to take a 5-0 lead into the third. Kmosena scored on another takedown, and picked up the 7-0 victory.

Chris Mackey would win by forfeit at 126, and 132 was a double forfeit, giving Antigo the 39-24 team victory.

Up next for the Robins was perennial conference powerhouse Medford. The dual meet started at 145 pounds, with Seth Beaber facing Carson Church. Church is currently ranked 5th at 138. Church was able to secure a pair of first period takedowns to take a 4-1 lead into the second. Starting on the bottom, Church was able to earn a reversal and a pair of near falls to take an 11-1 lead into the third. After Beaber chose to start on top, Church earned another reversal to finish with a 13-1 major decision.

At 152 pounds, Robby Hagerty faced 11th ranked (at 160) Emett Grunwald. Grunwald was able to score on a pair of takedowns and won by fall in the first round.

At 160 pounds, Jacob Dettmann was pinned by Oscar Hinderliter.

At 170 pounds, Gideon Sass and Logan Kawa wrestled a scoreless first period. In the second period, Sass started on the bottom and forced Kawa to lock his hands to earn a penalty point. Sass entered the third period with a 1-0 lead, and Kawa chose to start on the bottom. After a Kawa escape tied the match, Kawa earned a takedown for the 3-1 victory.

Josh Heuss got the Robins on the board at 182 pounds, defeating Hayden Johnson. Heuss was able to secure a first period takedown to take a 2-0 lead into the second. After Johnson chose to start down, Heuss was able to turn Johnson and earn near falls points. A late escape and takedown by Johnson cut Heuss’s lead to 4-3. Heuss elected to start the third in neutral, and due to a couple of stalling warnings forced on Johnson, Heuss won the match 5-3.

Medford would win by forfeit at 195 and 220, setting up a heavyweight match between Hunter Cordova and Braxton Weissmiller. Cordova dominated the match, once again winning by pinfall. In the first, Cordova secured a takedown and used a power half to earn near fall and a 5-0 lead going into the second. Cordova chose to start the second on top, and used another power half to earn the victory at 2:37.

Danny Livermore faced Thaddeus Sigmund at 106. Sigmund was able to secure a takedown and earned a fall at 1:24.

Medford won by forfeit at 113. At 120, Sam Bretl faced Ty Sova, who is an honorable mention at 113. Sova was able to secure a takedown and turn, winning by fall at 1:37.

At 126, Chris Mackey outmuscled Itsael Medina in route to a pinfall victory. Mackey score the first takedown, and then earned a near fall for a 4-0 lead. In the second, Mackey chose to start on the bottom, and earned a reversal in route to the pinfall at 3:46.

After Medford won by forfeit at 132, Logan Edwards faced Eli Mahner at 138 pounds in the final match of the evening. Edwards was able to score first with a takedown and took a 2-0 lead into the second. Edwards chose to start the second in neutral, and Edwards added another takedown for a 4-0 lead. Mahner then chose to start the third on top, but Edwards was able to secure a reversal, leading to a 6-1 victory.

In an exhibition match during the course of the evening, Alex Hofrichter picked up a pinfall victory over Noah Meshak. Danny Livermore and Alex Potts also competed in exhibition matches.

Up next for the High School Team is a pair of dual meets in Tomahawk. Currently, Antigo is projected to face Tomahawk and Rhinelander next Thursday, the 14th.
