Vehicle Side Windows

When Officers conduct a traffic stop it is expected that when they approach the vehicle, the driver will roll his or her window down. It is not uncommon for Officers to have to ask the driver to roll the window down, and the driver informs the Officer that they can’t because the mechanism is broken making it impossible for the window to be rolled down. It is also not uncommon for drivers to open their door and then explain to the Officer that their window is inoperable. This not only makes it inconvenient for the Officer and the driver by creating a communication barrier, it can also be unsafe for both, especially if traffic is heavy.

According to Wisconsin law 305.32 all font side windows in the driver’s compartment must be able to open. The law is specific in stating that the windows need to be operable so the driver is able to make hand signals if the occasion arises. This law is also helpful in making sure that our contact can be made with the driver safely and efficiently.
