Appreciating Trees Through Activities, Programs, and Facilities

Throughout the year there are a number scheduled of events and programs that take place within our forests and parks.

Dense canopy coverage in wooded stands creates shady areas for bikers, runners and hikers as they traverse the trails.

The urban canopy within our city parks creates natural gathering places that invite the community to enjoy an evening of music or a family to have an impromptu picnic dinner.  Below are a few of our community’s coordinated events and their locations which are enhanced by the wooded areas that they take place in.

Arbor Day:  Each year the City of Antigo Park and Recreation Department celebrates Arbor Day.  The number of trees planted each year varies, but the goal is to continue to plant per the 10 priority park plans as well as plant in boulevard/terrace areas.  Volunteers are encouraged to come and help with the plantings each year; lunch is provided.

Races, Runs, Walks Tours:

• Ice Age Trail Hike: Each year there is a coordinated spring and fall day hike along the Ice Age Trail near the City of Antigo.  This is a great opportunity to hike a section of the trail, enjoy nature, meet new people, and identify some trees.
• Healthy Ways Coalition Spring Walk & Fall Hidden Pictures Walk: These annual events take place on the Springbrook Trail, which winds through a natural area within city limits.
• Splash-N-Dash: The annual Splash-N-Dash takes place at Jack Lake.  The event involves a swim and then a 5K trail run.
• Tator Trot: The annual Tator Trot starts and finishes in City Park just off Aurora Street.  City Park is planted with maples, oaks, linden, honey locust and other varieties.
• Wolfman Triathlon: The Wolfman Triathlon is located in Langlade County.  This race involves a run, a bike, and a paddle through beautiful landscapes and forested areas.
• Annual Lakes & Leaves Bike Ride: Just like the title suggests this fall event takes you along country roads that highlight the beautiful fall colors of our forests.
• Bright Futures 5K Color Run: The Boys & Girls Club of Langlade County coordinates this fun event that takes place along sections of the Springbrook Trail and wooded areas.
