Flag Day

Posted

Saturday, June 14, was Flag Day, honoring the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as our national symbol by the Second Continental Congress 242 years ago.

In 1885, Bernard J. Cigrand, a schoolteacher from Fredonia, Wisconsin, celebrated the first Flag Day by teaching his students about the history of our United States Flag and reciting a ceremonial pledge. His efforts led to this national holiday to honor our flag. On May 30, 1916, President Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing our national Flag Day on June 14.

Citizens of Langlade County had opportunities to celebrate Flag Day locally.

Antigo Lodge 662 Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, along with the Music in the Park, hosted a Public Flag Day Ceremony at City Park at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 12. This was an informative and well-organized program, which was open to the public.

Another way of celebrating Flag Day was to fly your United States Flag with respect and honor at your home or business that week, remembering our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines serving in the United States Armed Forces. Before flying your flag, people were encouraged to take a good look at it. If a flag was tattered or torn, citizens were advised to replace it with a new flag and fly it proudly.
