Learn to Hunt for Food Class Slated; Participants and Mentors Welcome

Antigo, Wis. – If you would like to learn about harvesting sustainable and healthy upland wild game, consider registering for the upcoming Wis. Department of Natural Resources Learn to Hunt for Food program.

WDNR Conservation Warden Tim Otto says the Learn to Hunt for Food program offers novice adults an opportunity to learn about the benefits of eating upland wild game, recipes for wild game, and how to effectively harvest wild game – all done in an adult learning environment with open discussions, hands-on learning opportunities, and dynamic demonstrations.

Otto says portions of the class will include opportunities to sample locally raised and harvested wild game.  Participants are also encouraged to bring any food items to share with their class, such as garden goods, other local food, and drinks.  There will be several opportunities for participants to learn how to handle a shotgun and to develop their skills in shooting.  In May, students will get to participate in a pheasant hunt with the assistance of mentors.  Finally, the students will be paired-up with a mentor for a ruffed grouse hunt in September.  Also, they’ll have the opportunity for further hunting opportunities with their mentor.

Otto says in addition to class participants, mentors to assist in the May and September hunts are needed. Please consider sharing your expertise with novices.

• The class starts on April 18, 6 p.m., at the Antigo Town Hall on State Highway 64.
• The additional class dates are: April 22, 24, 30 and May 1, 8 and on May 11, when a pheasant hunt will be part of the session.
• Also, in September, class participants will go grouse hunting with a mentor.
