North Central Region road construction update

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) provides a weekly update on road construction in North Central Wisconsin, which includes: Adams, Green Lake, Florence, Forest, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Menominee, Oneida, Portage, Price, Shawano, Vilas, Waupaca, Waushara, and Wood counties.

Adams County

Highway: WIS 13

Location: County E to the railroad crossing (Adams)

Schedule: August 15 to mid-September 2016

Cost: $524,000

Description: Crews will resurface the roadway, install centerline rumble strips, and reconstruct the railroad crossing.

Traffic impacts: Crews will close WIS 13 to through traffic between Adams County F and County M at 6 a.m. on Monday, August 22. Traffic will be detoured via County F, County Z, and County J. Local traffic should expect to encounter flagging operations. The road is scheduled to reopen before the end of the day on Friday, August 26

 

Iron County

Highway: WIS 182

Location: Bear River Bridge; Price County line to WIS 47

Schedule: June 13, 2016 to late October 2016

Cost: $3.6 million

Description: Crews will replace the Bear River Bridge, resurface the roadway, replace 18 culverts, and install centerline rumble strips.

Traffic impacts: Single lane closures, temporary traffic signals, and a reduced lane width of 13 feet at the Bear River Bridge.

 

Langlade County

Highway: WIS 55 (*added*)

Location: School Road to County T

Schedule: August 22 to late October 2016

Cost: $1.46 million

Description: Crews will resurface the roadway, replace four culverts and install centerline rumble strips.

Highway: WIS 55

Location: WIS 64 to Hollister Road

Schedule: August 8 to early September 2016

Cost: $1.15 million

Description: Crews will resurface the roadway.

Highway: WIS 55

Location: South Langlade County line to WIS 64

Schedule: July 11 to early September 2016

Cost: $1.15 million

Description: Crews will resurface the roadway, replace three deteriorating culverts, and install centerline rumble strips.

Marathon County

Highway: WIS 29

Location: County J to County Q

Schedule: August 2 to late October 2016

Cost: $2.65 million

Description: Crews will repair and replace pavement on WIS 29 and the two interchange ramps, resurface the interchange bridges, and reconstruct the median crossovers.

Highway: WIS 52 (Stewart Avenue and Scott Street) (*updated*)

Location: 17th Avenue to 1st Street, WIS 52/Stewart Avenue/WIS 29 interchange ramps

Schedule: June 29, 2016 to late October 2016

Cost: $3.25 million

Description: Crews will resurface and recondition sections of the roadway, replace pavement, and replace traffic signals. Additional improvements include new sections of curb and gutter, sidewalk and storm sewer

Traffic impacts:

  • The outside lanes of WIS 52 are closed in each direction between 17th Avenue and 1st Street.
  • On Friday, August 19, crews plan to shift traffic onto the newly paved outside lanes of WIS 52 between 17th Avenue and 8th Avenue.
  • Lanes are closed on 1st Street, 1st Avenue, 3rd Avenue, and Scott Street to accommodate the work on WIS 52.
  • To ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians, parking is restricted along Scott Street from 1st Street to 3rd Street and on 1st Avenue for half a block north of Stewart Avenue.
  • Traffic backups and delays will likely occur during peak travel times. To avoid delays, local traffic may want to use an alternate route.

 

Highway: US 51

Location: Decator Drive to the Lincoln County line

Schedule: July 5, 2016 to late May 2017

Cost: $4.5 million

Description: Crews will resurface the highway and the four County WW ramps to extend the life of the pavement.

Highway: US 51

Location: Decator Drive to County WW

Schedule: February 29, 2016 to late October 2017

Cost: $6.32 million

Description: Crews will replace the bridge decks on northbound US 51 over Decator Drive and on northbound and southbound US 51 over County WW

  • Motorists on US 51 can expect to encounter lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 55 MPH between County WW and Decator Drive.
  • Decator Drive is open to traffic.

 

Highway: WIS 29

Location: Sunrise Drive to Business 51

Schedule: April 29, 2014 to May 25, 2017

Cost: $18.8 million

Description: Crews will widen and replace bridge decks on WIS 29 bridges over Business 51 and the Wisconsin River.

  • Motorists on WIS 29 can expect to encounter single lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 55 MPH until mid-November.
  • Crews will periodically close the sidewalk along Business 51, between Everest Drive and West Grand Avenue. One side of the sidewalk will remain open at all times.

 

Marquette County

Highway: I-39 (*updated*)

Location: WIS 23/82 to Edgewood Court

Schedule: March 14, 2016 to May 15, 2017

Cost: $7.2 million

Description: Crews will replace the I-39 southbound bridge and resurface the I-39 northbound bridge over the WIS 23/82 interchange, realign the southbound ramps at the interchange, realign a section of Crossroads Clinic Road, resurface the northbound and southbound I-39 bridges over Fawn Court, and raise the County M and Edgewood court bridges over I-39.

  • Single lane closures and flagging operations on WIS 23/82
  • Single lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 55 MPH on I-39 at:

  • WIS 23/82 interchange
  • County M

  • County M (Elk Road) over I-39 is closed. No detour is posted. The road is scheduled to reopen in late September.

 

Oneida County

Highway: US 8 (*added*)

Location: US 8/WIS 17 and US 8/County G intersections

Schedule: August 25 to early October 2016

Cost: $424,000

Description: Crews will resurface the intersections and replace traffic signal detector loops.

Highway: US 51 (*updated*)

Location: Bearskin Trail Bridge, Hazelhurst

Schedule: April 11, 2016 to early October 2016

Cost: $1.2 million

Description: Crews will replace the existing bridge to meet current standards.

Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter weekday single lane closures and temporary traffic signals at the bridge until August 19.

 

Highway: US 51

Location: Rocky Run Road to County Y

Schedule: February 29, 2016 to November 2017

Cost: $10.1 million

Description: Crews will reconstruct US 51, replace culverts, reconstruct intersections, lengthen existing passing lanes, and construct a new bridge over Rocky Run Creek.

Traffic impacts: The northbound and southbound passing lanes between Rocky Run Road and South Blue Lake Road are closed. US 51 remains open to one lane of traffic in each direction.

 

Portage County

Highway: WIS 54 (*updated*)

Location: WIS 54/Wood and Portage County U intersection

Schedule: June 10 to early September 2016

Cost: $1.5 million

Description: Crews will reconstruct the intersection as a J-turn to improve safety.

  • Motorists can expect to encounter single lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 55 MPH.
  • The WIS 54/County U intersection median is temporarily closed to traffic.
  • County U access at WIS 54 is temporarily closed until September 1. No formal detour is posted.

 

Highway: WIS 49, town of Alban

Location: Cedar Road to Lake View Road

Schedule: May 16, 2016 to September 2, 2016

Cost: $261,000

Description: Crews will rout and seal cracks to help prevent further pavement deterioration and chip seal and fog seal the highway surface to improve ride quality and protect the asphalt.

  • The east/west intersection of Cedar Road and the north/south intersection of Nerdahl Road will be closed.

Highway: I-39

Location: WIS 66/Stanley Street (Stevens Point) to the Little Plover River (Plover)

Schedule: April 4, 2016 to late October 2016

Cost: $1.5 million

Description: Crews will resurface the northbound and southbound bridges on I-39 over WIS 66/Stanley Street, over the railroad, and over the Little Plover River.

Traffic impacts: Work is suspended and is currently scheduled to resume August 29.

 

Highway: Business 51 (Post Road), Plover (*updated*)

Location: Green Drive to Springville Drive

Schedule: March 7, 2016 to late November 2016

Cost: $8.65 million

Description: Crews will convert the existing, undivided four-lane roadway to a divided four-lane roadway with wider lanes, a raised median, and designated turn lanes. Work also includes constructing new sidewalks, bicycle lanes, and providing new street lighting.

  • Business 51 will remain open to one lane in each direction.
  • Crews are planning several short-term closures (for storm sewer and utility work) at the following east intersections with Business 51:

  • August 18 - Sumac Lane

Shawano County

Highway: WIS 29

Location: US 45/WIS 29 and WIS 29/47 interchanges

Schedule: August 15 to late October 2016

Cost: $2.7 million

Description: Crews will resurface the ramps and roadways at the interchanges and apply anti-skid treatment to the bridges over WIS 29.

Traffic impacts:

  • Single lane closures on US 45 north and south over WIS 29.

  • A reduced lane width of 11 feet on the WIS 47 north overpass.

 

Highway: WIS 47 (Airport Drive)

Location: WIS 29 to WIS 22 (Green Bay Street), Shawano

Schedule: August 1 to late October 2016

Cost: $2.6 million

Description: Crews will reconstruct WIS 47 as a two-lane road between County B and WIS 22. Crews will also resurface sections of the roadway, improve intersections, and reconstruct the railroad crossing.

  • WIS 47 is closed between County B and WIS 22. Traffic is detoured via WIS 47, WIS 22, and WIS 29. The road is scheduled to reopen in late October.
  • Motorists on WIS 47 can expect to encounter single lane closures and flagging operations between WIS 29 and County B.

Highway: WIS 29

Location: Embarrass River Bridge

Schedule: June 13 to mid-October 2016

Cost: $1.53 million

Description: Crews will replace the bridge.

Waupaca County

Highway: US 45 (*added*)

Location: County W to County D

Schedule: August 22 to mid-September 2016

Cost: $750,000

Description: Crews will resurface the roadway.

Traffic impacts:

  • Crews plan to close US 45 between WIS 96 and Manske Road at 6 a.m. on August 22 to replace a culvert pipe. During the closure traffic will be detoured via WIS 96, WIS 76, and WIS 15. The road is scheduled to reopen before 6 a.m. on Thursday August 25.
  • Motorists can also expect to encounter daytime single lane closures and flagging operations.

 

Highway: WIS 54 (*updated*)

Location: Royalton railroad overpass to Jeanne Street, New London

Schedule: July 11 to early September 2016

Cost: $1.54 million

Description: Crews will resurface the roadway, install centerline and shoulder rumble strips, replace three culverts, complete maintenance on four culverts, and upgrade beam guard.

Wood County

Location: US 10 to County F

Schedule: April 25, 2016 to late November 2016

Cost: $5.5 million

Description: Crews will replace pavement, construct a new local road system, remove railroad crossings, reconstruct and realign intersections, and construct a pedestrian underpass.

Traffic impacts:

  • County P is closed between EZ-Avenue and North Road. No posted detour. The road is scheduled to reopen in early September.
  • The new local road system is open to traffic.

 

Motorists are reminded to drive with caution in the work zone and should be prepared to encounter slow moving trucks. Motorists should slow down, use caution and stay alert when driving through construction zones. To avoid delays, consider taking an alternative route and avoid peak travel periods.

Construction-related traffic impacts are subject to change and are dependent on favorable weather conditions and construction status.
