Northwoods Gateway Members Introduce Butterfly Garden

Every native flower counts because every butterfly and other pollinators are essential.

A new organization was recently formed whose members understand how important native flowers are for butterflies and other pollinators.  Pollinators are essential to maintain the world’s food supply.  The new organization chose the name Northwoods Gateway and is the local chapter of Wild Ones, Native Plants, Natural Landscapes.     In 1977 a small group of landscape gardeners realized the importance of native plants and brought Wild Ones to life.   Their mission was to educate and share information with members and community at the “plants roots” level and to promote biodiversity and environmentally sound practices.

Today, Wild Ones is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization and has grown to include many chapters throughout the United States.    Their mission statement has evolved to read:  “Wild Ones’ mission is to promote environmentally sound landscaping practices to preserve biodiversity through the preservation, restoration and establishment of native plant communities. What is that really saying? Wild Ones educates people on the importance of native plants, for the health of the environment and everything living in it. Wild Ones’ goal is to get more native plants in the ground in all landscapes – homes, businesses, schools, and along roadways”.

Northwoods Gateway chapter meet monthly generally in Antigo although people from surrounding communities and counties are urged to attend.  In addition to addressing the club’s business, pertinent information is shared with other meeting attendees.  Frequently the meetings include a featured speaker whose topic is relative to Northwoods Gateway goals.

The Northwoods Gateway chapter members encourage others to join them in supporting native plants, butterflies and other pollinators.  You do not need to be an experienced gardener.    Everyone is enthusiastically welcomed to become a member of the Club.  Additionally donations can be made to the Butterfly Garden.  Consider including native plants in family gardens and seek further understanding about the importance of environmentally sound gardening practices and help spread the words to others.
