Richard J. Lund, 93

Richard “Dick” J. Lund of Antigo died Friday, May 8, 2020 at The Bay at Eastview following a brief illness. He was 93 years old.

Dick was born on September 19, 1926 in Bryant to the late Alton and Mabel (Diercks) Lund.

He graduated from White Lake High School in 1944. He went on to serve in the US Navy during WWII. Returning from service, Dick enrolled at U-W Stevens Point to complete a degree in education. During this time, Dick met Elizabeth “Bette” Pelkey. The couple was united in marriage June 10, 1950 at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Stevens Point.

Initially Dick taught at White Lake and then transferred to Antigo to teach junior high civics and social studies and drivers’ education. He was greatly dedicated to the youth of the community as a teacher and as a coach. Dick was head coach for both basketball and baseball and an assistant football coach. Dick also drove truck for Fermanich Fuel and Baginski Potato Farm for many years.

He was a member of Ss. Mary & Hyacinth’s Catholic Church, a former member of Knights of Columbus and Antigo ELKS Club.

He enjoyed gathering with his friends at their McDonald’s coffee clutch, playing cards, and being a good neighbor. His greatest treasures were by far his wife and family.

Survivors in addition to his wife; Bette, include daughters; Debra (Philip) Waldvogel of Juneau, WI, Kim (Mike) Macy of Tulsa, OK, sons; Jeff (Anna) Lund of Antigo, John (Anne) Lund of St. Paul, MN, grandchildren; Julie (Luke) Waldvogel-Leitner, Kevin (Eileen) Waldvogel, Michael Waldvogel, Natasha (Bradley) Chrudimsky, Connor Lund, Jack (fiancée Alyssa Zuhlke) Lund, Allison (Andrew) Lund-Zalewski, Emilee Lund, and great grandson; Nash Chrudimsky; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Mauer of Sheboygan Falls and Sharon Baumann of Wausau; and one brother-in-law, Jim (Charlotte) MacDonald of Texas.

In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Lund.

A private family service was held with Father Matthew Simonar officiating.

A celebration of his life will be scheduled when the restrictions due to the coronavirus are lifted.

Interment will be in Queen of Peace Cemetery.
