Robins down Comets 6-2 in home ice opener

In its first chance to play to a home crowd this season, Antigo hockey defeated Great Northern Conference foe Waupaca 6-2 on Tuesday evening at the Langlade County Multi-Purpose Building.

Brennan Spencer got the Robins on the board first at the 4:07 mark of the first period, scoring off of an assist from Luke Berner. With CJ Levis netting another goal in the first 17 minutes, Antigo entered the first intermission with a 2-0 lead.

The game took a turn for the worse for Antigo as the second period came to a close. With just under three minutes to play in the second frame, the Comets’ Hunter Smith scored back to back goals to allow Waupaca to tie the game.

After the second intermission, the third period belonged to the Robins once again. After 11 minutes went by with the game deadlocked at two apiece, Adam Schmidt opened the game back up for Antigo with a power play goal at the 11:35 mark, assisted by Tyler Husnick. Schmidt would go on to score a second goal on the night later in the period.

With goals from Husnick and Berner, the Robins four-goal third period effort allowed Coach Matt Borneman and his team to capture their first win of the season on their home ice.

As of the December 5th, Week 1 state rankings, according to Wisconsin Prep Hockey, Antigo moved from No. 10 to No. 8 after a tough but successful four-game road trip to begin the season. Now 4-1 overall, the Robins hit the road once again for a five-game stretch that includes Tomahawk (Dec. 8), Lakeland (Dec. 15), Neenah-Hortonville-Menasha (Dec. 16), Fond du Lac Springs (Dec. 17), and Northland Pines (Dec. 20).
