Mildred Jansen “Millie”, of the town of Norwood, died Wednesday, November 6, 2019, at Aspirus Langlade Hospital surrounded by her family. She was 97 years old. She was born on December 6, 1921, in the town of Antigo, a daughter of Floyd and Ruth (Smith) Dewey. She married Roland Jansen on June 12, 1945, at St. John Lutheran Church in Mattoon. He preceded her in death on August 31, 2008.

She was a graduate of Antigo High School class of 1939.

She received training at the Langlade County Teachers College graduating in 1941 then taught in the Red River School District for five years and one year at Shadynook School in Shawano County.

She dairy farmed in the town of Norwood with her husband Roland for 31 years.

Mrs. Jansen was the clerk for the town of Norwood for 36 years. As clerk she was instrumental in organizing the consolidation of eight grade schools into the Crestwood School. She served as a Census Enumerator and was the first woman to be appointed to the Langlade County Farmers Home Administration Board. She also served several terms, and was the first woman, to serve as chair on the Langlade County Farm Bureau.

She was a charter member of the Antigo Chapter of Sweet Adelines chorus group and served as director of the Noteblenders for 20 years.

She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Mattoon, their LWML/Ladies Aid, was the first female treasurer of the congregation and directed the choir for many years.

Her hobbies included bowling, gardening, playing cards, feeding the birds, and time with family and friends.

Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl “Cherry” (Lester) Williams, Mattoon, Debra (Michael) Bauknecht, Wisconsin Rapids; seven grandchildren, Michelle (Michael) Umland, Scott (Kris) Williams, Jody (Craig) Swinehart, Suzanne (Ralph) Balde, Josh Bauknecht, Erika (Ben) Budtke, Matthew (Tori) Bauknecht; 14 great grandchildren, Jonathan, Erin, and Lauren Walker, Cullen, Hannah and Jackson Williams, Alec and Kyle Swinehart, Sawyer and Rilynn Bauknecht, Waylon, Ellie, Charlie and Hank Budtke.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a son, David Jansen; a sister, Genevieve Tillman; a brother, Russell Dewey.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2019, at 11 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, Mattoon with Rev. Dean Bertsch officiating. Burial will take place in the town of Norwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Bradley Funeral Home and Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church.
