The Edgar Chess Tournament was sponsored by the Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation and directed by Nate Olmsted, with collaboration from Colin Hanson, Edgar School District Chess Advisor. Students from Mosinee, Antigo, Plover, Colby, Merrill, Appleton, Marathon, D.C. Everest, Wittenberg, and Edgar participated.
Sara Sternberg, Marathon Chess Coach, commented on the atmosphere of the event, saying, “The turnout was fantastic, and it’s exciting to see middle and high school students connecting and cheering each other on. Students from different schools are meeting, building camaraderie, and demonstrating great sportsmanship.”
The tournament also served as Edgar’s Senior Appreciation event. While Edgar honored its graduating seniors with banners and a recognition ceremony, seniors from other participating schools were also acknowledged. Antigo seniors Brion Koszarek and Kole Olivotti were recognized for their dedication to scholastic chess.
In addition to competition, the tournament supported a charitable initiative titled “Checkmate to End Homelessness,” collecting donations for a local homeless shelter and reinforcing the event’s emphasis on community involvement and service.
The Antigo Chess Club congratulates all participating players for their hard work, sportsmanship, and commitment to academic competition. Their performances continue to reflect positively on the Antigo community and its growing chess program.
