Critical Need for Type O Donors Following Emergency Blood Use

Posted

The Community Blood Center (CBC) urges all eligible donors to schedule a lifesaving donation as soon as possible, after emergencies reduced the available blood supply. Type O blood inventory, especially O negative, is critically low after multiple trauma patients required large amounts of blood over the weekend. As of Monday at 5:45 a.m., the available supply dropped to just one-third of what is needed to meet anticipated demand in the coming days. O negative is particularly crucial in emergencies when every second counts. Known as the universal donor, O-negative blood can be given to any patient regardless of blood type.

“There is no substitute for human blood. It can only come from volunteer donors. Right now, local hospital patients are depending on that generosity,” said John Hagins, President & CEO, The Community Blood Center. “Whether you’re a regular donor or giving for the very first time, we encourage you to act now to help save lives in your community.”  While Type O blood is in critical need, every donation is essential.

Patients rely on donors of all blood types for routine surgeries, cancer treatments, childbirth complications, life-threatening emergencies and more.  Donors are welcome to invite friends, family members and co-workers to join them at a CBC Donor Center or mobile blood drive to amplify their impact. Book an appointment by visiting communityblood.org, using the CBC Donor App or calling (800) 280-4102.
