Virginia “Ginny” Treganza Smith, 101, passed away on January 27, 2017 at Evergreen Terrace Assisted Living in Antigo where she spent her last six years.

Virginia was born on August 26, 1915 to Ray and Mable Treganza in Mitchell, South Dakota. She and her family moved to Wisconsin when she was 11 years old, and they settled in Oshkosh and then Mauston. She graduated from Mauston High School and the University of Wisconsin in Madison. After college graduation, Virginia taught high school English in Hustisford, Wisconsin and, in 1941, married Rex M. Smith, a native of Antigo whom she had met in college. They moved to Antigo where Rex practiced law for the next 50 years and Ginny briefly taught high school English, and for years volunteered in numerous organizations and charities.

Virginia was a Red Cross volunteer at Langlade Hospital for many years, served on the Antigo Public Library Board and was active in the Friends of the Library.

Ginny was predeceased by her husband, Rex, her parents and stepmother, Edith Treganza, and 2 sisters. She is survived by a son, Douglas L. Smith (Dawne) of Sheridan, Montana, and a daughter, Susan Smith Blakely (Bill), of Great Falls, Virginia as well as 4 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and her brother, John Treganza, of Mauston.

A family memorial service is planned for later this summer. Memorials are suggested to the Antigo Public Library, the Antigo Faith United Church of Christ or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
