On Friday, December 21st, the Antigo High School Wrestling Team Continued its Successful 2018-2019 Wrestling Season with a Non-Conference Victory over Bonduel, 45-27
For Antigo Times
The dual meet started at 220 pounds with a bit of a surprise, when Bonduel moved up Isaac Banker, who is ranked 8th in D3 at 182 pounds, to face Antigo’s Nick Roller. Roller was able to wrestle a tough, competitive match, but came up on the short end of an 11-4 decision. Jacob Giese, the 2nd ranked individual at 220 for D3, then faced Talik Bussey at heavyweight. Despite an impressive early takedown by Bussey, Giese was able to achieve the fall and put Bonduel up 9-0.
Seth Beaber received a forfeit at 106, setting up a match between Jordan Dykstra of Antigo and Gavin Bougie of Bonduel, who is an honorable mention in D3. Dykstra scored with an early throw and tough riding on top, eventually pinning his opponent and giving Antigo the lead 12-9.
Sam Hoffman was able to get his first varsity action of the season at 120 pounds, but fell by decision to Luis Lagunes 10-4. Logan Edwards also dropped a decision to the 11th ranked individual in D3, Jason Toellner, 9-2. After the 126-pound match, Bonduel was back in the lead 15-12.
Ben Stimac saw his ranking improve to 9th in D1 earlier this week, and made a case for going even higher in a dominant win over Michael Smith. Stimac was able to get the early takedown, and then had multiple near falls before finishing with a pin in the second period. Stimac’s victory put Antigo back in the lead 18-15.
Bonduel went on a little run with Max Sokolski, an honorable mention at 132 for D3 defeating Dylan Warax, and Jakob Froeming defeating Jacob Dettman to retake the lead 27-18.
Facing a 9-point team deficit, Josh Heuss of Antigo looked for revenge against Moises Lagunes of Bonduel, after Lagunes was able to pull off an overtime victory last weekend at the Shawano Holiday tournament. Huess was able to avenge his loss, defeating Lagunes 5-2 in the rematch.
Jovanni Castaneda built off the momentum that Huess built with a key takedown and great work on top to pin Colin Ewing of Bonduel and tie the score at 27.
Korbin Krueger used an impressive throw to record a quick fall at 170, and then Collinn Eldridge, who saw his ranking improve to 6th in D1, received a forfeit to seal the dual meet victory. After another forfeit to Brady VandeWeerd, Antigo finished ahead 45-27.
Up next for Antigo is the On The Water Invite in Oshkosh December 28th and 29th. With 67 teams scheduled to attend, On The Water is one of the largest and toughest tournaments in Wisconsin.
