Antigo Cross Country Smiley Invite
FOR ANTIGO TIMES
Saturday September 21st marked the fourth meet of our season at the 63rd Annual Smiley Invite – one of the biggest meets in the state. This year’s edition had 63 teams competing.
We were hoping the rain would hold off and luckily it did, with only a light mist for a bit of time.
All of our girls ran and continued their streaks of dropping time with some big cuts again this meet. Alyssa dropped over three minutes from her season opener in Crandon. Ellie dropped nearly a minute and both Rylee and Jena dropped 45ish seconds.
On the boys side, they all ran great as well, despite all of them adding on a handful of seconds. Logan and Michael pushed it to the max on Tuesday – it was a smaller meet and I wanted them to race for the win, which meant going out with the eventual winner and hanging on as long as they could. Eventually they finished 2nd and 3rd, but I think we paid for that a bit at Smiley with the quick turnaround.
Luckily, we had some well needed rest before our home meet on Tuesday September 24th at Gartzke Flowage. We hosted Merrill, Medford (girls defending state champions) Rhinelander, and Wausau West (top runner on the boys side won Smiley in 15:51).
